Future Minerals Pioneers Bootcamp Concludes With Broad International Participation In Riyadh

The in-person bootcamp of the Future Minerals Pioneers Competition ended in Riyadh between 8 and 10 January 2026. It formed part of the Global Minerals Innovation Competition, held during the Future Minerals Forum under the patronage of Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar AlKhorayef. The programme aimed to turn innovative ideas into realistic mining sector solutions aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 economic diversification goals.

The Future Minerals Pioneers Competition includes three tracks that target core challenges in the mining sector. The Smart Technologies Track supports digital tools that raise mine efficiency and help regulatory compliance in mining communities. The Safety and Security Track addresses risk prevention, occupational health, and safer working conditions. The Resource Sustainability Track promotes circular mining and converts mining waste into resources with added value and longer life.

The bootcamp drew wide international participation and brought together entrepreneurs, technical experts, and investors. Over three days, 70 qualified teams presented project concepts and final solutions. Participants attended 13 specialist workshops run by partner organisations and joined mentorship sessions with 30 mentors. These activities helped strengthen technical understanding, improve business readiness, and connect innovations with real needs across the mining and minerals value chain.

The opening day began with a session led by Vice Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs Eng. Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer. Eng. Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer stressed innovation as a core requirement for developing the mining sector. The vice minister explained that the competition turns promising concepts into tangible outcomes. Eng. Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer described participants as an integrated ecosystem of enthusiasm and inspiration working toward shared sector progress.

The first day also featured a keynote by National Industrial Development and Logistics Program Chief Executive Officer Eng. Jameel bin Ahmed Al-Ghamdi. Eng. Jameel bin Ahmed Al-Ghamdi outlined the Future Minerals Pioneers initiative’s strategic importance for the mining sector and wider industries. Eng. Jameel bin Ahmed Al-Ghamdi stated that the initiative opens broader chances for integration and growth. The keynote linked these goals directly to Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s industrial economy.

On the second day, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar AlKhorayef visited the bootcamp and met the participating teams. Bandar AlKhorayef reviewed several projects in detail, discussed proposed solutions with innovators, and highlighted the value of national and international talent. Bandar AlKhorayef reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to innovation as a way to increase value creation and competitiveness in the mining sector.

President of the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) Eng. Suleiman AlMazroua also attended the second day’s activities. Eng. Suleiman AlMazroua examined a range of projects and discussed how they could improve links between mines, ports, and logistics networks. The visit reflected efforts to integrate the mining ecosystem with supply chains and logistics services, supporting smoother export routes and more efficient transport of mineral products.

During the first two days, the 13 workshops and mentoring sessions focused on several priorities. Experts helped teams refine their technical models and market approaches. Mentors guided participants on how to match solutions with real operational challenges across exploration, extraction, processing, and downstream activities. This support aimed to raise each project’s readiness for implementation and strengthen its potential impact on mining practices.

The final day centred on presenting completed projects to judging panels. All 70 qualified teams showcased their innovations and demonstrated expected benefits, business models, and environmental impact. Panels assessed each proposal using criteria that covered innovation, impact, applicability, and sustainability. The competition’s evaluation process followed strict governance standards, with clear scoring and expert review for every track and project.

The judging panels included 18 judges drawn from 16 local and international organisations. These entities brought expertise in mining, technology, investment, and innovation. Panel members were formally recognised on the third day for supporting the competition, mentoring participants, and helping identify solutions most ready for deployment in the mining and minerals sector. Their engagement aimed to connect promising teams with future partners and investors.

The winning teams and partner entities will be announced and honoured on 14 January 2026 during the fifth Future Minerals Forum. This event will showcase the outcomes of the Future Minerals Pioneers Competition, highlight successful innovations, and underline the mining sector’s contribution to Saudi Vision 2030. It will also support the Kingdom’s standing as a global platform for innovation in mining and minerals.
