Saudi Green Initiative Forum 2024 Concludes With Major Climate Initiatives And Energy Transition Progress

The Saudi Green Initiative Forum 2024 wrapped up on Wednesday in Riyadh, coinciding with the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The event, inaugurated by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, showcased Saudi Arabia's advancements in energy transition and highlighted the contributions of women and youth.

Over two days, the forum attracted more than 1,500 participants from both public and private sectors. It featured 50 speakers across 25 sessions. During this time, Saudi Arabia announced five new initiatives valued at SAR225 million. Additionally, 14 memoranda of understanding were signed, fostering discussions aimed at boosting climate and environmental efforts.

Saudi Green Initiative Forum Highlights Key Achievements

Saudi Arabia is making notable progress in renewable energy. The nation targets a renewable energy capacity of 130 gigawatts by 2030. Currently, 6.2 gigawatts have been integrated into the grid. In 2024 alone, projects totaling 20 gigawatts were initiated. With a development pipeline of 44.2 gigawatts, the Kingdom aims to supply clean electricity to over seven million homes.

Since launching the Saudi Green Initiative in 2021, over 100 million trees have been planted and 118,000 hectares of degraded land rehabilitated—an area larger than 165,000 football fields. These efforts contribute to the goal of planting ten billion trees and combating desertification.

The forum included a session on the "National Red Sea Sustainability Strategy," launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This strategy offers a framework for protecting Red Sea biodiversity and supports developing an advanced blue economy model in Saudi Arabia.

Prominent leaders from the energy sector participated in the forum. Notably, Amin H. Nasser from Saudi Aramco and Patrick Pouyanné from TotalEnergies attended. Pouyanné emphasized balancing security, affordability, and sustainability—the "energy trilemma"—by combining fossil fuels with renewable sources.

The event underscored Saudi Arabia's commitment to environmental sustainability through various initiatives and strategic partnerships. These efforts reflect a broader vision for a sustainable future while addressing global environmental challenges.
