Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Addresses UN Security Council On Leadership For Peace Amid Global Conflicts

Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in a Security Council debate on "Leadership for Peace" during the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York. He expressed gratitude to Slovenia for hosting the session and commended its support for international peace efforts, including its recognition of Palestine.

During his address, Prince Faisal highlighted the increasing conflicts and crises worldwide. He noted that these issues are compounded by a growing distrust in the multilateral international system's ability to meet people's aspirations for peace and development. He emphasized the need to evaluate why international multilateral action is declining in resolving crises and addressing shared challenges.

The minister stressed the urgency of reforming the Security Council. He stated that restoring respect for international charters requires applying international law consistently and holding violators accountable without selectivity. This reform is crucial to enhance the effectiveness of global peace efforts.

Prince Faisal pointed out that a lack of "leadership for peace" is a significant issue. He remarked, "Making peace requires courage in making difficult decisions." He criticized political leaders who prioritize personal interests over collective peace, affecting international organizations' efficiency, particularly the Security Council.

The absence of decisive international action against ongoing Israeli military escalation was cited as evidence of weaknesses in global political will. Prince Faisal argued that this highlights shortcomings within the multilateral system. The Kingdom believes that peace is essential for cooperation and development and ensures their sustainability.

To break free from cycles of violence and crises, Prince Faisal called for empowering responsible international leadership. He urged thwarting attempts to export narrow political interests at the expense of security and coexistence among peoples. The Kingdom remains committed to supporting and developing the multilateral system.

Commitment to Collective Action

The minister reiterated Saudi Arabia's dedication to strengthening collective action for security and common development. The Kingdom aims to restore confidence in international institutions by enabling their purposes effectively. This commitment aligns with Saudi Arabia's vision for global cooperation.

The debate saw participation from Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the UN, and Abdulrahman Aldawood, Director General of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Their presence underscored Saudi Arabia's active role in promoting peace through multilateral engagement.
