Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Leads Kingdom’s Delegation At G20 Summit On Sustainable Development And Energy Transitions

His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented Saudi Arabia at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The summit focused on "Sustainable Development and Energy Transitions." Prince Faisal highlighted the G20's role in fostering cooperation to tackle sustainable development challenges. He praised Brazil's efforts in promoting development goals and reducing economic inequalities.

Prince Faisal stressed that energy security is a global issue impacting development and poverty eradication. He advocated for energy transition plans that consider each country's unique circumstances. A balanced approach should focus on three pillars: energy security, affordable access, and environmental sustainability.

Kingdom’s Delegation at G20 Summit on Sustainability

The Foreign Minister explained that energy transitions require time and significant investments to be fair and inclusive. These transitions must ensure market stability and energy security. He emphasized using all energy sources, including hydrocarbons with cleaner applications, alongside technological innovation to manage emissions effectively.

Saudi Arabia's commitment to renewable energy was also highlighted by Prince Faisal. The Kingdom aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Investments in clean hydrogen production and the carbon circular economy framework are part of this strategy.

The Kingdom's investments in innovative technologies have led to one of the lowest emission intensity rates from oil and gas operations globally. Prince Faisal noted that these efforts align with national conditions and development plans, contributing to a successful energy transition model.

He also mentioned initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. These projects demonstrate Saudi Arabia's dedication to increasing renewable energy use while maintaining economic growth.

International Cooperation for Sustainable Progress

Prince Faisal underscored the importance of international cooperation in ensuring fair and inclusive energy transition pathways. Such collaboration supports global development efforts, leading to balanced progress for future generations.

In his concluding remarks, Prince Faisal expressed gratitude for Brazil's leadership during its G20 presidency in 2024. He extended best wishes for success to South Africa as it prepares to lead the group next year.
