Food Security Is Crucial For Global Peace And Human Dignity, According To FAO Director-General

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, QU Dongyu, highlighted the critical link between food security and global peace, stability, and human dignity. According to recent UN data, 733 million people suffer from chronic hunger, 2.3 billion experience food insecurity, and 2.8 billion lack access to nutritious diets.

QU Dongyu addressed these concerns in a letter to G20 foreign ministers during their meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. The discussion focused on the global geopolitical landscape. He pointed out that conflict remains a significant threat to food security in regions like the Sahel, Haiti, Ukraine, and Gaza.

In areas such as Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan, agrifood systems are deteriorating due to policy failures. This degradation has heightened tensions between farmers and pastoralists competing for scarce resources. QU Dongyu stressed that neglecting agrifood systems in unstable regions accelerates economic collapse and fuels conflict.

Beyond conflicts and policy issues, QU Dongyu noted that extreme climate events pose additional challenges. Rising temperatures and severe weather disrupt food production and increase risks for farmers. These conditions also affect disease patterns and accelerate migration.

The Director-General warned that these climate-related challenges undermine efforts to eliminate hunger by 2030. They threaten the stability of agrifood systems and risk exacerbating global inequalities. Addressing these inequalities is crucial since many weaknesses in agrifood systems stem from unequal access to innovation, technology, natural resources, and healthy diets.

QU Dongyu emphasised that tackling these issues is essential for ensuring stable agrifood systems worldwide. He called for equal access to resources as a means to strengthen these systems and reduce disparities globally.

The FAO's message underscores the importance of addressing both conflict-driven disruptions and climate change impacts on food security. By focusing on equitable resource distribution and sustainable practices, there is hope for reducing hunger and promoting global stability.
