Folktales Reimagined Exhibition Showcases Emirati Heritage At Rabat Book Fair

The "Folktales Reimagined" exhibition, organised by the UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY), has been captivating audiences since its inception in 2019 at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy. Now in its sixth edition, it is being showcased at the 2025 Rabat International Book Fair, where Sharjah is celebrated as the Guest of Honour.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, highlighted the exhibition's increasing influence during statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). He explained that reimagining mythical creatures through art helps reflect diverse customs and traditions, creating a visual bridge that enhances intercultural understanding. Illustrations play a crucial role in engaging audiences and leaving lasting impressions.

Folktales Reimagined Celebrates Emirati Heritage

The exhibition aims to celebrate cultural heritage and encourage dialogue between civilisations by bringing together artists from various backgrounds. Each artist is tasked with reinterpreting traditional folktales from another culture, highlighting shared values that connect people across borders. This initiative fosters greater cultural understanding and connection through literature and art.

Marwa Al Aqroubi, President of UAEBBY, mentioned that this month-long exhibition features ten artists — five from the UAE and five from Morocco. These artists have reimagined some of the most iconic folktale characters from both countries. Each artist brings their unique vision shaped by generational perspectives and personal experiences.

Previous editions of "Folktales Reimagined" have been held in countries like Russia, South Korea, Mexico, and Greece. These events introduced Emirati folklore to diverse audiences while allowing Emirati artists to creatively reinterpret stories from other cultures. Such exchanges promote mutual appreciation and understanding among different societies.

Al Aqroubi also revealed plans to compile all previous editions into a single comprehensive publication. This collection will celebrate the diverse cultural heritages represented throughout the exhibition's history, offering a rich tapestry of global folklore for future generations to explore.

The ongoing success of "Folktales Reimagined" underscores its role in promoting cultural dialogue and artistic exchange. By inviting artists to reinterpret each other's folktales, it highlights universal themes that resonate across cultures while celebrating unique traditions. The exhibition continues to build bridges between societies through creativity and storytelling.
