Folk Heritage Through The Eyes Of Others Conference Explores Cultural Perceptions In Sharjah

The Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) has launched the second Heritage Conference, themed "Folk Heritage Through the Eyes of Others." This event is held at the Arabian Heritage Centre in University City, Sharjah. Attendees include Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Institute, and Abubakar Al Kindi, Director of the Institute, alongside experts and academics from over 20 countries.

The conference spans two days and features more than 40 academic contributions. Experts will delve into how folk heritage is perceived by others through research papers, panel discussions, and workshops. Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam remarked on the responsibility to reflect on how heritage has been viewed by others through various lenses over time.

Exploring Folk Heritage Perspectives in Sharjah

Dr. Al Musallam emphasised that folk heritage acts as a bridge for cultural dialogue. He stated: "Heritage is not a static past, but a living force in the consciousness of people." The event aims to reintroduce folk heritage as a space for thought and interaction. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi's patronage underscores Sharjah's dedication to cultural dialogue.

Abubakar Al Kindi highlighted that this conference aligns with SIH's efforts to enhance engagement around Arab folk heritage. It also reflects Sharjah’s commitment to being a global platform for cultural dialogue. The conference supports scientific research and international partnerships that protect heritage for future generations.

Dr Saif Al Badwawi stressed the importance of preserving heritage as part of national identity: "Heritage strengthens our sense of belonging to the homeland." He urged young people to serve their nation by preserving their roots, warning against abandoning one's identity.

Academic and Cultural Impact

Dr Muna Bounama noted that the conference aligns with SIH’s vision to impact both academically and in heritage fields. She said: "This year’s edition sheds light on the image of the East in the mirror of the West." The event aims to enhance dialogue through cultural communication rather than imposition.

The conference contributes to solidifying Sharjah’s status as a hub for intercultural dialogue. It offers an intellectual platform for exploring identity representations in Western consciousness. The event also provides opportunities to correct stereotypes using precise scientific approaches, fostering mutual understanding among cultures.
