FNC Highlights Consultative Practices In UAE Society On International Democracy Day
The Federal National Council (FNC) joins global parliaments in celebrating International Democracy Day on 15th September annually. This day underscores the FNC's dedication to sustainable development, following the founding fathers' vision. The UAE has long embraced consultation and participation in governance.
The FNC embodies the relationship between state authorities through its legislative, supervisory, and diplomatic roles. It reflects Emirati society's unique approach to democracy, which is based on values that ensure citizen participation in national development and leadership.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan continues the founding fathers' legacy by promoting consultation and enhancing citizen involvement in decision-making. His Highness supports empowering the FNC to fulfil its constitutional duties, addressing issues important to citizens and contributing to national progress.
In his inaugural speech at the first ordinary session of the first legislative term on 12th February 1972, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan outlined the council's responsibilities and principles of consultation. This foundation has guided the FNC through eighteen legislative terms.
The FNC has advanced parliamentary life and political participation under wise leadership. The programme announced by the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan included elections for half of the council's 40 members and significant female representation. Since 2019, women have comprised 50 percent of the council.
