Flydubai Unveils Comprehensive Fleet Retrofit Project For Enhanced Passenger Comfort
Flydubai has demonstrated a robust growth trajectory in passenger numbers since the onset of 2024, transporting close to five million passengers from 1st January to 28th April, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. This growth is attributed to the airline's network expansion, including new operations to Al Jouf, Langkawi, Mombasa, Penang, and The Red Sea. Additionally, flydubai has broadened its European footprint with new flights to Basel, Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius. The airline's seasonal summer operations, spanning June to October, extend its reach to over 125 destinations across 58 countries.
Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer at flydubai, highlighted the airline's consistent network growth and its successful expansion into South-East Asia and further into the African and European markets. Despite challenges such as delays in aircraft deliveries, flydubai anticipates a record-breaking summer season. The airline is also focusing on an ambitious retrofit project aimed at enhancing the onboard experience for passengers.

Since the beginning of 2024, flydubai has welcomed two new aircraft into its fleet, increasing its total to 86 Boeing 737 aircraft. This expansion comes amid supply chain challenges and anticipated delivery delays. The fleet comprises 29 Next-Generation Boeing 737-800s, 54 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and three Boeing 737 MAX 9s. A significant cabin upgrade is underway for most of the Next-Generation Boeing fleet as part of a multi-million dollar retrofit project initiated in January 2024.
Eight aircraft have already undergone a full cabin refresh, featuring the carrier’s flagship lie-flat Business Class seats and new economy seats from RECARO. These upgrades aim to provide a consistent travel experience across the fleet. Additionally, some aircraft will maintain an all-economy configuration but will see an upgrade to new RECARO economy seats equipped with Inflight Entertainment.
The retrofit project also includes increasing the seat pitch on its recliner Business Class seats from 45 to 53 inches on some of its newer aircraft. This enhancement is scheduled post-summer and is designed to offer a more comfortable experience on shorter to medium-haul flights. Flydubai aims to complete this retrofit programme by year-end, with work being carried out by its in-house maintenance team and GMR Aerotech MRO.
Flydubai's strategic expansion has not only increased its network to more than 125 destinations in 58 countries but also reintroduced pre-pandemic level frequencies across its GCC market. This growth underscores flydubai's commitment to connecting Dubai with previously underserved markets or those without direct air links, reinforcing its position as a key player in the aviation sector.
