Five Consortiums Advance To Final Stage Of Dubai World Challenge For Self-Driving Transport 2025
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed that five consortiums, both global and local, along with a prominent company, have reached the final stage of the 4th Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025. The theme, "Dubai Autonomous Transport Zone," encourages participants to develop a model district integrating various transport modes. This initiative aims to set a global standard in self-driving transport by offering residents tailored transport options with high service quality.
The winners will be announced at the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport next September at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The decision was made by an international judging panel led by Dr. Steven Shladover, an expert in self-driving technologies. The finalists include the WeRide / Deutsche Bahn consortium from the UAE, Germany, and China; BrightDrive / eVersum / Shiptec / SeaBubbles from Switzerland, France, the UAE, and Austria; Orcauboat / PIXMOVING / Heriot-Watt University Dubai from the UAE and China; SURAA / Arti from Austria; and Zelos from Singapore.

In the upcoming phase, field tests will be conducted at each finalist's premises in their respective countries. These tests will follow approved standards and procedures. The results will be disclosed during the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport in September. The challenge aims to expand self-driving transport adoption across all levels while addressing key issues like first and last-mile connectivity, traffic congestion, and public transport underutilisation.
The organising committee established specific criteria for applicants' qualification. These criteria focus on credibility, future vision, skills, and expertise. Participants were evaluated based on performance across several tests adhering to standards such as technical capability in vehicle manufacturing and adaptability of self-driving technology.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA, stated: "The Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport stands as the first event of its kind globally." He emphasised that it has become a leading international platform attracting experts in self-driving transport including policymakers, technology developers, researchers, and academics.
The event provides opportunities to showcase best practices worldwide through panel discussions, seminars, and workshops. It also facilitates idea exchange while exploring advancements in self-driving technologies. Al Tayer noted that participation exceeded expectations by 170%, highlighting significant interest from local and international companies.
Strategic Vision for Dubai
Al Tayer added that self-driving transport is central to RTA’s strategy. They are committed to launching innovative initiatives to realise this vision in Dubai. "The challenge seeks to expand the adoption of self-driving transport across all levels," he said.
The event aligns with Dubai’s D33 Agenda which aims to position the city among leading economic hubs globally while doubling its economy size in coming years. It strengthens Dubai's reputation for innovation while fostering collaboration between public-private sectors advancing research across vital industries.
The challenge also evaluates commercial viability considering operability relevance to needs of Dubai/UAE along with operations/service delivery capacity integration across smart mobility modes ensuring comprehensive assessment criteria are met by participants.
