Eastern Region Prepares 710 Fishing Boats For Upcoming 2025 Shrimp Season
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the Eastern Region has finalised its plans for the 2025 shrimp fishing season. This season is scheduled to commence on August 1 and will continue for six months. A total of 710 fishing vessels, comprising both large and small boats, have been authorised at various ports within the region.
Eng. Fahad Al-Hamzi, Director General of the ministry's branch in the Eastern Region, mentioned that electronic permits are being issued this season to simplify procedures. This initiative allows fishermen to easily switch their licenses from fish to shrimp fishing. The ministry is also working with the National Company for Agricultural Services (AgriServ) to streamline the licensing process.

The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, known as "Reef Saudi," provides financial assistance to Saudi fishermen. This support is available for each fishing trip lasting at least six hours, with a limit of up to 15 trips per month. These measures aim to bolster Saudi fishermen and enhance the fisheries sector in line with national strategic objectives.
To ensure sustainable practices, a six-month fishing ban was enforced before the season began. This ban was intended to allow shrimp and fish stocks time to replenish. Eng. Al-Hamzi emphasised that compliance with regulations is crucial for preserving marine life and avoiding penalties.
The Fish Resources Research Center collaborates with the General Directorate of Border Guard to conduct monitoring campaigns throughout the season. These efforts are designed to detect any violations and protect the marine environment. Fishermen are encouraged to adhere strictly to all regulations during this period.
These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach by the ministry to support local fishermen while ensuring environmental sustainability. By coordinating with various entities and providing financial incentives, the ministry aims to advance its strategic goals effectively.
