AlUla Symposium On Fire Risk Management Highlights Essential Strategies For Protecting Heritage Sites
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and the Saudi International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) have put forward essential recommendations to safeguard people and preserve history at cultural heritage sites. These were discussed during the AlUla Symposium on Fire Risk Management at Historic and Heritage Sites, which was recently held in AlUla.
The symposium gathered 80 experts from both national and international backgrounds, focusing on fire management and heritage conservation. It served as a platform for vital discussions on strategies for fire prevention, mitigation, and response tailored to historic and cultural sites. These discussions aim to shape future policies and procedures across AlUla’s significant cultural landmarks.

A key theme of the symposium was balancing the preservation of historic structures with fire safety measures. Discussions included implementing fire codes like the Saudi Historical Building Code while respecting the unique characteristics of old buildings. Maintaining structural integrity during fires is crucial to protect occupants.
Case studies such as the 2019 Notre Dame fire were presented, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive fire safety planning. Experts shared practical strategies including conducting fire risk assessments, community training, and creating tailored roadmaps for specific locations. These proactive measures demonstrate how effective risk management can safeguard both lives and heritage.
Experts highlighted best practices, case studies, and innovative technologies that emphasize a holistic approach prioritizing safety for occupants, visitors, surrounding communities, and landmarks themselves. The symposium aimed to balance heritage preservation with modern fire safety needs.
Princess Nouf bint Mohammed bin Fahad, Chairman of Saudi ICOMOS, stressed the urgency of preventative measures: "Fires pose an existential threat to priceless historical and heritage sites, endangering their authenticity, integrity and the values they represent. The negative effects of fires on historical and heritage sites remind us of the urgent need to work to prevent such disasters."
Guiding Future Efforts
The recommendations from this symposium will guide RCU’s ongoing efforts to enhance fire safety at AlUla’s heritage sites. This initiative aligns with Vision 2030's broader goals, aiming to establish AlUla as a global leader in heritage conservation.
