FII Institute, UNICEF, And Global Fund Join Forces To Address Preventable Diseases Globally

The Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute, in collaboration with UNICEF and The Global Fund, has released a report highlighting the need for innovation and access in combating preventable infectious diseases. Titled "Scaling Innovation to Maximize Global Health Impact," the report reveals that tuberculosis claimed 1.25 million lives and malaria resulted in 600,000 deaths in 2023, predominantly affecting low- and middle-income countries.

Despite advancements like AI diagnostics, biotech therapies, and solar-powered oxygen machines, their potential remains underutilised without robust systems for equitable distribution. The report emphasises the necessity of urgent collaboration to bridge this gap by aligning policy, financing, and education to ensure all communities benefit from these innovations.

Richard Attias, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Acting CEO of FII Institute, stated, "Collaboration is paramount when faced with the mounting death toll of preventable diseases. Innovation in technology and economics must move hand in hand to build stronger, more resilient healthcare systems. I am proud of the progress FII Institute continues to drive through global partnerships in pursuit of this mission."

Helga Fogstad, Director of Health Programme at UNICEF, stressed the importance of reaching children with these innovations. She said, "Innovation can only save children’s lives when it reaches them. Our job is to make sure every breakthrough becomes an everyday tool – for every child, everywhere - always keeping the most vulnerable in focus."

The Global Fund's Executive Director Peter Sands highlighted their commitment to eradicating preventable diseases. He remarked, "From the outset, the Global Fund has been driven by the belief that no one should die from a preventable disease. Through a unique, multistakeholder partnership, we have pushed AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria into retreat — and now we can defeat them for good. We must build on our successes, harness innovation, and ultimately put an end to these formidable diseases."

The report calls for strengthening healthcare systems through collaborative efforts that integrate technological advancements with economic strategies. This approach aims to create resilient systems capable of delivering innovative solutions equitably across all regions.
