FIFA Pledges $2 Billion For Global Football Development And 1,000 Mini-Pitches

Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, has made three significant commitments at the International Summit on Sports for Sustainable Development in Paris. Addressing an audience of global leaders and sports officials, he promised that football would unite the world, FIFA would continue investing in football development, and 1,000 mini-football pitches would be built globally.

The summit was organised by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and took place just before the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, it gathered over 500 participants. These included heads of state, government leaders, international organisation representatives, athletes, and stakeholders from sports and development financing sectors.

Infantino emphasised that the summit provided "a great opportunity to exchange ideas with world leaders on how sport and football, in particular, can make a positive difference." He highlighted FIFA's ongoing efforts to leverage football's global appeal to support education, health, and youth initiatives worldwide.

The first pledge made by Infantino was to continue uniting the world through football and sport in general. He acknowledged the efforts of IOC President Thomas Bach and his team during the Olympic Games and football tournaments. "We continue to unite the world with football and with sport generally," he stated.

Infantino's second commitment involved substantial financial investment. He pledged that FIFA would invest over US$2 billion in football development across its 211 Member Associations over the next two years. This investment aims to reach a total of US$5 billion since Infantino became FIFA President in 2016.

This funding will support various projects, including the FIFA Talent Development Scheme. Infantino mentioned plans to establish 75 academies in 75 countries worldwide as part of this initiative. These academies aim to nurture young talent and promote football development at grassroots levels.

Building Mini-Football Pitches

The final pledge focused on infrastructure development. Infantino committed to installing at least 1,000 mini-pitches globally. These pitches are intended to provide sustainable football infrastructure, especially for disadvantaged inner-city or rural areas. By doing so, FIFA aims to enhance access to sport and support the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
