FIFA Commends Saudi Football Federation For Completing Historic Documentation Project

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) recently extended its congratulations to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) for completing the Saudi Football History Documentation Project. This significant initiative aims to celebrate and preserve the Kingdom's rich football heritage. FIFA highlighted this project on its official website, recognising it as a key collaboration between SAFF and the FIFA Museum.

FIFA's report detailed the extensive efforts involved in documenting Saudi football history. The project reviewed over 500,000 press articles, more than 800 documents and interviews, and numerous books and references. It identified 1,141 national team matches, over 3,900 club competitions, and participation of Saudi officials in more than 3,300 international games.

The FIFA Museum played an advisory role in this project by being part of an International Experts Panel. It shared historical information from FIFA archives and provided benchmarks on how other member associations have managed similar initiatives. This collaboration was crucial in ensuring the project's success.

Mattias Grafström, FIFA General Secretary, praised SAFF for establishing a transparent and scientific methodology under the supervision of the SAFF General Assembly. He stated, "With over 120 years of Saudi football history catalogued...this landmark project has established definitions that will showcase Saudi Arabia’s football legacy."

This documentation project is not just about recording past achievements but also about preserving them for future generations. By cataloguing such an extensive record of matches and competitions, it ensures that Saudi Arabia’s football heritage remains accessible and celebrated.
