The ancient practice of pearl diving, a cornerstone of Farasan's economic and cultural heritage, has left an indelible mark on the islands. This tradition, which saw men venture into the depths in search of pearls, has significantly influenced the region's customs and way of life. Historically, May heralded the beginning of the pearl-diving season, a period that extended for three to four months, aligning with the summer when pearls were most abundant.

Preparations for this season were meticulous. Ship owners would ensure their vessels were sea-ready, while sailors' families stocked up on necessities to sustain them in their loved ones' absence. The divers embarked on their journey to the oyster beds, adhering to a structured five-day cycle for diving operations. The division of the spoils was clear: the first four days' findings went to the diver, and the fifth day's haul was claimed by the ship owner.

Divers employed weights to descend over 12 meters below the surface, connected by a lifeline to their support team above, who assisted in their safe return. These assistants were compensated with a portion of the gathered oysters for their efforts. The daily routine began post-sunrise and paused at noon for rest, resuming in the afternoon with the task of opening oysters to assess the day's yield.

Pearl merchants utilized seven copper sieves with decreasing hole sizes for sorting pearls, alongside scales and instruments for valuation. This rigorous and perilous endeavor inspired "Al-Dana," a unique form of folk singing that expressed the sailors' yearning for home and family.
