Farasan Islands Host 20th Hareed Festival: Celebrating Culture And Tourism
The Farasan Islands, located 40 kilometers off the coast of Jizan in the Red Sea, are currently the center of attention as they host the 20th edition of the Hareed (parrotfish) Festival. This annual celebration, taking place in late April and early May, marks the arrival of parrotfish to the islands' shallow waters, a phenomenon that has been celebrated by the Farasan people for generations. The festival not only highlights the cultural significance of this event but also puts a spotlight on the islands' rich cultural heritage, traditions, and tourism potential.
One of the festival's main attractions is "Al-Dana", an ancient form of vocal art deeply embedded in Farasan's cultural identity. Originating from the challenges faced by sailors during long pearl-diving expeditions, Al-Dana is a poignant expression of longing and endurance. Additionally, the festival serves as a platform for local residents to display their traditional handicrafts, including fishing traps and nets, palm frond weaving, and hat knitting.

A unique feature of the Hareed Festival is a competition that allows families to engage in traditional parrotfish catching using barriers to prevent escape. This activity not only provides entertainment but also connects participants with the island's longstanding fishing heritage. The Saudi Press Agency has highlighted several of Farasan's tourist attractions, emphasizing their exceptional potential for tourism. Among these is Al-Qassar Village, located just five kilometers from Farasan Grand Island. Known for its large palm oasis and abundance of fresh groundwater, Al-Qassar Village attracts numerous visitors with its traditional stone and palm leaf constructions.
The village served as a summer retreat for Farasan residents, who would travel there to enjoy the cooler climate during Al-Asef, the northwestern summer wind following the Hareed fishing season. With around 400 houses built using traditional techniques designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, Al-Qassar Village offers a glimpse into the architectural ingenuity of its inhabitants.
The Hareed Festival is more than just a celebration of parrotfish; it is a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural richness of the Farasan Islands community. Through its diverse activities and attractions, the festival invites visitors to explore the islands' natural beauty and historical sites, offering an immersive experience into the heart and soul of Farasan.
