FAO Celebrates Emirati Women’s Day And Highlights Women's Impact On Agriculture
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations is celebrating Emirati Women’s Day alongside the United Arab Emirates. This year, the event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the General Women’s Union (GWU), led by H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. Known as ‘the Mother of the Nation,’ she is a key figure in promoting women's roles in national development, especially in agriculture and food security.
FAO acknowledges the UAE's ongoing efforts to empower women, particularly within the food and agriculture sectors. In collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), FAO has supported initiatives like the UAE’s first women-only Farmer Field School (FFS). This programme, launched during the 2024 date palm season, aims to enhance women's participation in sustainable agriculture.

Located in Abu Samra, Al Ain, this FFS brought together eight Emirati women farmers who own and manage their farms. The programme offered a hands-on learning experience focusing on sustainable date palm cultivation and integrated pest management. A special emphasis was placed on managing the red palm weevil, a significant pest affecting date palms.
The FFS provided a platform for these women to exchange knowledge and apply good agricultural practices. It aimed to strengthen their role in local agrifood production systems. Facilitated by FAO and national experts, the training focused on participatory, field-based learning—a core principle of FFS globally.
Dr Ahmad Mukhtar, FAO Regional Representative for Near East and North Africa, highlighted the importance of Emirati women in agriculture. He stated, "The pioneering role of Emirati women in the agricultural sector stands as a truly inspiring model. By investing in their skills, knowledge, and leadership, we not only foster innovation and resilience in our agrifood systems but also lay the foundation for a sustainable and prosperous future."
The initiative underscores how empowering women aligns with broader sustainable development goals. It drives progress for communities and nations alike by fostering innovation and resilience within agrifood systems. The contributions of these women exemplify how their empowerment can lead to sustainable growth and prosperity.
This celebration serves as a reminder of the critical role that Emirati women play in advancing national development through agriculture. Their involvement is essential for achieving sustainability goals that benefit both local communities and broader national interests.
