FANR Spearheads Global Discussion On Nuclear Emergency Readiness At IAEA Meeting

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) chaired the 12th Meeting of the Representatives of Competent Authorities Identified under the Early Notification Convention and the Assistance Convention. Organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the event took place recently in Vienna, Austria. Experts convened to exchange insights on their countries’ arrangements for responding to nuclear and radiological emergencies and to discuss challenges in emergency preparedness and response.

Raoul Awad, Deputy Director-General for Operations at FANR, led the Authority’s delegation. He emphasised the importance of collaboration in developing robust measures for effective emergency response under complex circumstances. The participants also discussed harmonising emergency preparedness and response arrangements at both national and international levels.

FANR Leads Nuclear Readiness Talk

Key topics included the future of emergency preparedness in light of advanced technologies, training and exercises, and lessons learned from past events. Mohamed Al Marzooqi, FANR’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager, chaired a session titled "Communication with the Public in an Emergency". This session focused on public communication during nuclear emergencies, addressing communication challenges and combating disinformation.

The IAEA recognised the UAE’s official registration into the Response and Assistance Network (RANET). This network provides international assistance to countries during nuclear or radiological emergencies. The UAE joined RANET earlier this year, registering capabilities in radiation survey, sampling and analysis, radiological assessment and advice, medical support, and nuclear installation assessment and advice.

The meeting highlighted the importance of international cooperation in enhancing emergency preparedness. Experts shared insights on various technical aspects, including harmonisation of response arrangements and future challenges posed by advanced technologies. Training exercises and lessons learned from past incidents were also discussed to improve future responses.

FANR’s active participation in such international forums underscores its commitment to maintaining high standards of nuclear safety and emergency preparedness. The UAE’s inclusion in RANET further strengthens its capabilities to respond effectively to nuclear or radiological emergencies.
