Xposure 2024 Experts Unveil The Next Era Of Filmmaking With Cutting-Edge Technology
This weekend, the Xposure International Photography Festival hosted an insightful panel discussion titled "The Unreal Future of Film". The session brought together leading figures from the film industry to explore the latest in virtual production, Extended Reality (XR), and the capabilities of the Unreal Engine, a premier tool for creating photoreal visuals and immersive experiences. The discussion provided a deep dive into the technologies that are shaping the future of storytelling and content creation.
The panel featured Olivier Geyhsen, a filmmaker and XR artist; Siraj Jhaveri, a director with over three decades of experience; Bartosz Jankowski, a producer and screenwriter specialising in Virtual Production technology; and Bora Batur, a production designer. Each panelist brought a unique perspective on the integration of technology into filmmaking.

The conversation began with Jhaveri discussing the blend of physical and digital worlds through virtual production. He emphasized how virtual elements could be added to footage to alter objects, settings, backgrounds, and locations seamlessly. Geyhsen then spoke about the potential of virtual production to transport audiences to worlds beyond imagination, including inaccessible real-world locations recreated in 3D.
Jankowski focused on the technical side, stressing the importance of pre-production for cost-effective virtual production. He noted that while virtual production can accommodate various projects, the level of planning required varies significantly. Batur discussed changes in the filmmaking pipeline, highlighting the need for early involvement of the art department to ensure a smooth integration of physical and virtual elements.
Challenges and Opportunities
Jhaveri pointed out challenges such as latency periods with new technologies and the necessity for extensive pre-production to integrate computer-generated elements smoothly. Despite these challenges, all panelists agreed on the importance of collaboration and communication. They also recognized the potential of AI technology in enhancing efficiency and streamlining production workflows.
However, despite technological advances, Batur reminded attendees that storytelling remains paramount in filmmaking. The session underscored that while technology offers new tools and methods for filmmakers, the essence of storytelling continues to be at the heart of content creation.
The discussion at the Xposure International Photography Festival highlighted not only the current state of virtual production and XR but also offered a glimpse into its promising future. As these technologies evolve, they hold the potential to further enrich storytelling, offering filmmakers unprecedented creative freedom.
