Experts Highlight Sustainable Aviation Fuel Adoption At GISS 2025 For Clean Energy Transition
Efforts to speed up the use of clean energy in aviation were discussed by experts, focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). These discussions took place at the 4th ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium 2025 (GISS 2025) and the first Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GSAM 2025).
Fabrice Espinosa, Founder and CEO of the Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA), highlighted the need for regional cooperation in Asia to implement SAF. He stated that ASAFA's main aim is to create an inclusive approach involving both government and private sectors to boost sustainable fuel adoption across Asia.

Espinosa outlined five key pillars for ASAFA: promoting regional policies for fair competition in SAF, enhancing capacity building, advancing new technologies like alcohol-to-jet and power-to-liquid, increasing knowledge sharing, and securing financing. He believes these pillars are vital for long-term sustainability and industry growth in Asia.
Jane Hupe, Director of the environment programme at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), spoke about the need for a comprehensive policy framework to hasten clean energy adoption in aviation. She stressed balancing the global framework from the CAAF3 conference in the UAE in 2023 to ensure all elements are ready for a smooth transition.
Hupe also emphasised capacity building as crucial so all countries can participate in this clean energy shift. She highlighted helping nations become active players in this transformation as essential.
Financing Clean Energy Transition
On financing, Hupe noted that sufficient investment is key to supporting this transition. She pointed out that it ensures aviation can grow without unnecessary limits. Adequate funding is necessary for a successful shift to cleaner energy sources.
The discussions at GISS 2025 and GSAM 2025 underline the importance of collaboration, policy development, and investment. These elements are crucial for advancing sustainable practices within the aviation sector globally.
