Experts Discuss AI's Influence On Art And Culture At Culture Summit Abu Dhabi
The Culture Summit Abu Dhabi recently delved into the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on art and culture. Experts discussed AI's increasing role in shaping cultural production and consumption. Professor Iyad Rahwan, from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, highlighted AI's dual impact: curating content through algorithmic filtering and creating new cultural works like AI-generated art and music.
Rahwan is keen to explore how this trend is transforming art, science, and cultural output. He stressed the importance of managing AI's risks while maximising its benefits. Rahwan also expressed interest in interdisciplinary collaborations that merge science and art in exhibitions with both creative and scientific goals.
Glenn Lowry, Director at the Museum of Modern Art, noted that the Culture Summit provides a global platform for discussing contemporary cultural issues, including AI’s effect on museums. He described museums as dynamic spaces where new ideas and technologies are explored, fostering global cultural exchange and innovation.
Lowry referenced André Malraux’s "imaginary museum" concept from the 1940s as an early vision of today's digital and AI-driven cultural landscape. This idea has evolved into what we now see with AI's integration into cultural institutions.
Lowry also highlighted artist Refik Anadol's work, known for its use of AI. Anadol’s piece "Unsupervised — Machine Hallucinations," showcased at the Museum of Modern Art, employed algorithms to analyse 138,000 pieces from the museum’s collection. This process generated new artworks that blend heritage with advanced technology.
