EWEC Secures Four New Sites For Major Renewable Energy Developments In Abu Dhabi

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has received approval to develop four new sites in Abu Dhabi for solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy projects. These sites cover about 75 square kilometres. The initiative includes three solar PV plants in Al Faya, Al Khazna, and Al Zarraf, along with a wind farm in Sila. These projects aim to add 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV capacity and up to 140 megawatts of wind capacity.

The solar PV developments will help EWEC reach its target of 10GW installed capacity by 2030 and 18GW by 2035. This aligns with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s (DoE) Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Initiative. Ahmed Mohamed Al Rumaithi from the DoE highlighted the importance of securing land for these renewable projects, stating it supports sustainable economic growth.

EWEC Announces New Renewable Energy Sites

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) expressed enthusiasm about working with EWEC on these projects. She emphasised that this collaboration is crucial for the UAE's energy transition and environmental goals. The partnership ensures that new energy infrastructure coexists with natural ecosystems, reinforcing EAD's commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, noted that these sites were secured through collaboration with key partners. This teamwork is essential for decarbonising UAE’s energy production and addressing climate change challenges. Partners include the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, DoE, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Department of Municipalities and Transport, EAD, and the Ministry of Defence.

The projects are expected to supply 60 percent of Abu Dhabi’s power demand from renewable sources. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance low-carbon energy solutions across the region. By working together, these organisations aim to reduce carbon emissions significantly while supporting national sustainability objectives.

The allocation of land for these renewable energy developments marks a significant step towards achieving clean energy targets in Abu Dhabi. It reflects a strategic commitment to advancing sustainable practices within the energy sector. Through collaborative efforts, these initiatives will contribute to a more resilient future for the UAE's energy landscape.
