EWEC Sets Stage For Q1 2024 Clean Energy Certificates Auction In Abu Dhabi

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has officially opened registration for its first quarter 2024 auction of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi, set for 14 March. This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi's broader efforts to certify clean energy consumption among its entities, facilitating the tracking and verification of progress towards environmental objectives. The upcoming auction follows a year of significant growth in demand for CECs, highlighted by the largest purchase of these certificates to date and an unprecedented number of participants.

EWEC's contribution to the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), marking the event's debut in the Middle East, underscores the increasing relevance of CECs in promoting sustainable practices. Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, emphasized the role of the UAE’s leadership in extending 2024 as the Year of Sustainability. He noted that sustainability is a fundamental value at EWEC, with strategic initiatives aimed at supporting the UAE's clean energy transition and decarbonization efforts. The CECs scheme is pivotal in this context, enabling Abu Dhabi's entities to lessen their carbon footprint and align with the UAE’s net zero ambitions.

Q1 2024 Clean Energy Certificates Auction Open

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) introduced CECs as the sole accredited instruments verifying the environmental and economic benefits derived from clean energy consumption within the region. Each CEC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity from a clean energy source, thereby certifying an entity’s sustainable energy use. As the Single Registrant and Auction Operator, EWEC plays a crucial role in facilitating the CECs scheme, which adheres to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation's (I-REC Standard) globally recognized criteria. This compliance enhances an organization's sustainability profile significantly.

Entities interested in participating in the forthcoming auction for Clean Energy Certificates can register until 14 March 2024. For more information on registration or to reach out to EWEC’s Clean Energy Certificates team, visit www.ewec.ae/en/CleanEnergyCertificates or email [email protected].
