ICRC And IFRC Stress Every Attack On Humanitarian Workers Endangers Communities They Serve
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have emphasised the critical importance of protecting humanitarian workers. They stated, "Every attack on a humanitarian is an attack on the community they served." This message was shared in a joint statement to commemorate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of ICRC, and Kate Forbes, President of IFRC, expressed deep sorrow for colleagues who lost their lives while saving others. They remarked, "This World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we mourn our colleagues who were appallingly killed while trying to save lives. Their deaths demand far more than empty words of outrage—they demand action."

The leaders highlighted that ignoring attacks on humanitarian workers is unacceptable. They said the international community must not overlook violations of war rules and deliberate targeting of aid workers. Such acts betray laws meant to protect civilians and reduce suffering during conflicts.
The tragic incident involving Palestine Red Crescent Society staff in March drew global attention. However, this was not an isolated event. Humanitarian workers face dangers while performing duties like driving ambulances and delivering aid to frontline areas.
This year alone has seen the loss of 10 humanitarian colleagues. In 2024, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement experienced its deadliest year with 38 staff and volunteers killed. The ongoing trend suggests that 2025 could be even more perilous if no action is taken.
They concluded by urging states and conflict parties to take responsibility for reversing these alarming trends. Protecting humanitarian workers, upholding international humanitarian law, and supporting shared humanity are crucial steps needed now.
