EU Reaffirms Commitment To Global Climate Action At COP29 In Baku, Azerbaijan
The European Union (EU) is committed to enhancing global climate efforts, as demonstrated at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11th to 22nd November. The EU aims to support ambitious financial and investment targets. Discussions will build on the energy transition goals set at COP28 in Dubai, UAE. These include phasing out fossil fuels, tripling renewable energy investments, and doubling energy efficiency by 2030.
The EU is working with international partners to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Climate change is a borderless issue impacting lives worldwide. At COP29, the EU seeks to align financial flows with the Paris Agreement by setting a new collective climate finance target. This involves leveraging private investments and innovative funding sources.

The European Commission highlighted the role of the National Quality Work Group in aligning financial flows with the Paris Agreement. Transforming multilateral discussions on climate finance is crucial. EU negotiators are preparing for ambitious contributions next year, having already published a statement on the EU’s 2040 climate target earlier this year.
The Commission plans to propose legislation for a 90 percent emissions reduction target for 2040 under the European Climate Law. The EU team aims to conclude negotiations on international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. There is growing momentum for robust carbon offset mechanisms and funding mitigation projects, stressing standards based on integrity and accountability.
European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, leads the EU’s negotiating team at COP29. He collaborates with the Council Presidency and EU Member States to achieve their mandate set last month. Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson will participate on 14th and 15th November, focusing on transitioning from fossil fuels and advancing clean technologies.
Meanwhile, Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, will attend a high-level event titled "The Future of Net-Zero Competitiveness" on 12th November at the conference. This event underscores the importance of innovation in achieving net-zero goals.
The EU's commitment at COP29 reflects its dedication to addressing climate change through strategic partnerships and policy initiatives. By aligning financial flows with climate goals and promoting clean technology transitions, the EU aims to make significant progress in global climate action efforts.
