European Union And Jordan Commit To A Stronger Strategic Partnership
The European Union and Jordan have expressed their intent to elevate their relationship to a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership. This was confirmed during the fifteenth meeting of their Association Council on 15 July 2024 in Brussels. Both parties reviewed their dynamic and multifaceted partnership, which has been in place since the EU-Jordan Association Agreement came into force in 2002.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to uphold democratic principles and fundamental human rights as outlined in the universal declaration on human rights and the EU-Jordan Association Agreement. They acknowledged the significant progress made in Jordan's political, economic, and administrative modernisation process. This includes recent economic reforms, structural changes, and efforts to empower women and youth in decision-making roles.

The EU confirmed its ongoing support for Jordan as it faces multiple challenges amid increased uncertainty and geopolitical instability. The EU will deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) for Jordan's 2024 parliamentary elections at the invitation of Jordanian authorities.
Both parties agreed to enhance capacity building in education, focusing on technical education, vocational training, scholarships, and addressing educational gaps caused by COVID-19. They highlighted the crucial role civil society organisations play in promoting human rights, socio-economic development, and prosperity.
The geopolitical landscape has changed significantly since the adoption of the EU-Jordan Partnership Priorities for 2021-2027 in June 2022. Both parties noted this shift during their discussions. They stressed the importance of working together to elevate their relations to a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.
Middle East Peace Efforts
The EU and Jordan reiterated their call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to end the war and humanitarian crisis. They supported the US ceasefire proposal announced on 31 May 2024, as per UNSC Resolution 2735. Both parties emphasised that a two-state solution is essential for a just, lasting resolution of the Middle East conflict.
They also stressed maintaining the historic status quo for holy sites in Jerusalem, including upholding the historic Hashemite Custodianship. This is crucial for regional stability and peace between Israel and Palestine.
Syrian Crisis Resolution
The EU and Jordan underscored the need for a political solution to end the Syrian crisis per UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They emphasised preserving Syria's unity and territorial integrity while ensuring terrorism's defeat. Alleviating humanitarian suffering and creating conditions for refugees' voluntary return are also key priorities.
In conclusion, both parties are committed to strengthening their partnership amidst evolving geopolitical challenges. Their collaborative efforts aim at fostering stability, development, and peace within the region.
