EU And IOM Officials Meet To Strengthen Joint Partnerships And Enhance Migration Cooperation

Senior officials from the European Union (EU) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) gathered in Brussels for their eleventh annual meeting under the EU-IOM Strategic Cooperation Framework. This high-level meeting, co-chaired by Beate Gminder of the European Commission and IOM Director General Amy Pope, highlighted the strategic partnership's significance in managing migration policies amid global challenges.

The discussions covered recent developments in Ukraine, Syria, and surrounding regions. They also focused on a route-based approach to migration governance, ensuring effective return and reintegration according to European and international laws. Promoting regular migration pathways was another key topic.

EU and IOM Enhance Migration Cooperation

Amy Pope praised the EU's enduring support and reiterated IOM's dedication to dialogue with the EU on all migration aspects. Both parties acknowledged that enhanced partnerships between countries are crucial for addressing issues at various points along migration routes comprehensively.

Emergency assistance, humanitarian aid, protection, durable solutions for internal displacement, innovative climate mobility approaches, and safe pathways for migrants were discussed. Addressing irregular migratory flows and combating smuggling and trafficking were also priorities.

The EU confirmed its role as a stable donor committed to a strong multilateral system with the United Nations at its core. The new political and funding environment was reviewed, with both sides exchanging views on these changes.

In 2024, European Commission funding to IOM exceeded EUR 590 million. Alongside its Member States, the EU remains IOM’s primary donor. This financial support underscores their commitment to addressing migration challenges effectively.

The meeting underscored the importance of cooperation between countries to tackle migration issues comprehensively. By working together, they aim to provide emergency assistance and protection while promoting safe migration pathways.
