EPAA Sharjah Announces Discovery Of Rare Ant Species Carebara Sharjahensis In Wadi Shees

The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) has made a notable scientific discovery through the Al Dhaid Wildlife Center. A new ant species, named Carebara Sharjahensis or the Sharjah Ant, was found in Wadi Shees. This discovery adds to Sharjah's contributions to biodiversity research and conservation, highlighting the region's ecological richness.

The discovery of this rare ant species is a testament to the success of Sharjah's environmental monitoring system. It underscores the expertise of local researchers who diligently work to protect and document the area's natural wealth. The EPAA continues to support environmental studies and field surveys, ensuring high protection levels for mountainous regions.

Sharjah Discovers Rare Ant Species in Wadi Shees

Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf from EPAA’s Al Dhaid Wildlife Center led the discovery after extensive field surveys in Wadi Shees. Only one specimen of this "soldier" ant was found, indicating its rarity and specialised habitat preferences. The species likely lives underground, making it challenging to detect.

The Carebara Sharjahensis is the first documented record of its genus in the UAE and only the third known species on the Arabian Peninsula. This achievement aligns with Sharjah’s vision of prioritising science and knowledge in biodiversity conservation and advancing specialised research efforts.

The newly discovered ant shares some similarities with a species from Zimbabwe but has distinct features like well-developed lateral horns on its head and fine sensory hairs. Its uniform yellow colouration and specific structural traits further highlight its uniqueness.

Researchers are continuing their efforts to find other colony members, such as queens, males, and workers. Initial findings suggest that these ants lead a hidden lifestyle beneath soil layers and among decomposing organic matter.

Sharjah’s Commitment to Conservation

This discovery reinforces Sharjah’s commitment to supporting scientific research and documenting unique environmental assets within the Hajar Mountains. The region is home to rare endemic species that require protection and preservation.

EPAA expressed appreciation for the scientific efforts at Al Dhaid Wildlife Center, which strengthen Sharjah’s position as a leading hub for biodiversity research in the region. The authority remains dedicated to safeguarding these areas for future generations.

The Carebara Sharjahensis discovery highlights Sharjah's dedication to embedding science as a core element of biodiversity conservation. By focusing on advanced research, they aim to enhance their presence on both regional and global maps of scientific discoveries.
