EPAA Completes Planting Of 11,600 Mangrove Trees In Khor Kalba To Support Climate Goals
The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah has successfully concluded a significant mangrove planting initiative at the AlQurm Protected Area, Khor Kalba. This effort is part of their ongoing mission to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change. In collaboration with Emirates Nature-WWF, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and Bee’ah, they planted 11,600 mangrove seedlings over two weeks.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA in Sharjah, stated, "The Mangrove Planting Program is an ambitious initiative that enhances Sharjah’s contributions to achieving the UAE’s strategic goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030. It is also a crucial step toward supporting the UAE’s efforts in realising its Net Zero by 2050 Strategy. This programme exemplifies our commitment to environmental sustainability and our dedication to fostering governmental and community collaboration to combat climate change."

Al Suwaidi expressed pride in the partnership with Emirates Nature-WWF, which facilitated the planting of 11,600 mangrove seedlings in AlQurm Protected Area. She highlighted that this project reflects a shared commitment to environmental sustainability. The initiative aims to instil positive environmental awareness within the community, encouraging individuals to appreciate ecosystem preservation.
Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director-General of Emirates Nature-WWF, remarked on the importance of nature in tackling climate challenges. "Nature is our strongest ally in addressing the climate emergency. By protecting, enhancing, and restoring ecosystems like mangroves, we can significantly boost carbon absorption and mitigate climate change," she said. The partnership with EPAA has been pivotal in restoring mangroves at Khor Kalba.
The programme is part of a broader strategy to expand mangrove planting across new areas in Sharjah. Continuous monitoring ensures the long-term growth and sustainability of these mangroves. AlQurm Protected Area remains vital for biodiversity conservation and sustainable eco-tourism promotion.
Abdullatif also noted that their efforts align with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategy. Initiatives like Priceless Planet by Mastercard have contributed significantly to these restoration efforts. Ongoing monitoring ensures that planted mangroves remain healthy and effective in their ecological roles.
This comprehensive approach underscores a commitment to preserving natural heritage for future generations while promoting eco-friendly practices within communities.
