Enhancing Cultural Identity In The Cyber World: Insights From Majalis Abu Dhabi And Cybersecurity Council

Majalis Abu Dhabi, in partnership with the Cybersecurity Council (CSC), recently hosted a session titled "Enhancing Cultural Identity in the Cyber World". This event took place at Mohammed Al Mahmoud Al Baloushi Majlis in Al Ain and Al Mushrif Majlis in Abu Dhabi. The aim was to bolster cybersecurity culture and safeguard against digital threats as technology becomes more integrated into daily life.

Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, led the session. He discussed national efforts to maintain cultural identity amidst rapid technological changes. He highlighted policies that promote digital awareness and build a society capable of tackling cybersecurity challenges. The dialogue explored how digital advancements can strengthen national identity and preserve Emirati cultural values within a secure online environment.

Cultural Identity in the Digital Age Discussed

The discussion emphasised that cultural identity is crucial for psychological balance and social cohesion. Technology can act as a bridge, connecting individuals to their heritage through digitisation. Museums and libraries now use digital archiving to protect human heritage, allowing younger generations access to their history anytime, anywhere.

Dr. Al Kuwaiti noted that technological development offers opportunities to reinforce cultural bonds and national identity. Virtual spaces facilitate experience sharing and event organisation that revive customs and traditions. They also allow individuals to explore their cultural identity through online communities sharing language or heritage. However, he warned against over-reliance on technology, which might lead to a shallow understanding of culture.

Technology provides rich learning opportunities about heritage through language apps, AI tools, and virtual lessons. Virtual reality technologies offer immersive experiences of historical sites and traditions, fostering deeper cross-cultural understanding. Dr. Al Kuwaiti stressed responsible use of these technologies to avoid superficial representation or cultural appropriation.

Digital Platforms as Cultural Catalysts

Attendees discussed how the internet serves as a platform for creators from diverse backgrounds to showcase their work, enriching cultural diversity. This interaction has produced a blend of authenticity and modernity in music, art, and fashion. Technology contributes to forming collective identities within an interconnected global context.

Advanced technologies can strengthen national identity by preserving heritage and traditions. Participants highlighted the importance of communities leading digital initiatives to protect their cultural rights. Citizens from various age groups shared ideas on cyberspace's role in shaping cultural identity.

Dr. Al Kuwaiti concluded by affirming the complex relationship between technology and cultural identity requires balancing preservation with innovation. When used wisely, technology supports national identity in the digital age. He praised Majalis Abu Dhabi's collaboration for promoting cybersecurity culture among citizens while addressing cyber threats' implications on communities.
