ENEC Introduces Graduate Plant Operator Programme For Future Emirati Nuclear Leaders
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has introduced the Graduate Plant Operator (GPO) Programme. This initiative aims to develop future Emirati leaders in nuclear operations, reinforcing ENEC's dedication to nurturing the next generation of professionals who will advance the UAE's nuclear sector. The programme is tailored for high-achieving Emirati graduates with engineering degrees, offering them a pathway to acquire essential skills and experience in nuclear plant operations.
Participants in the GPO Programme start as Local Operators at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. This role provides them with practical training and a deep understanding of operational systems. After three years, those who excel can advance to Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) training. SROs play a crucial leadership role, ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and testing of plant systems.

ENEC’s Managing Director and CEO, Mohamed Al Hammadi, emphasised the strategic importance of this programme. He stated, "The Graduate Plant Operator Programme is a strategic investment in our national human capital. By empowering today’s graduates, we are building the UAE’s clean energy legacy; ensuring our plant operates to the highest national and international standards of safety, security, and efficiency."
Nuclear energy is vital for energy security and sustainability in the UAE. The long lifecycle of nuclear plants has created a new sector offering valuable careers for at least 100 years ahead. This ensures job security for decades. ENEC's initiatives aim to maintain a skilled workforce dedicated to safely operating the Barakah Plant throughout its 60-year lifespan and beyond.
The GPO Programme complements ENEC’s existing Graduate Development Programme (GDP). The GDP offers structured learning over 12 to 30 months for Emirati graduates across technical and support roles critical to Barakah’s operations. Admission criteria for both programmes are closely aligned to ensure consistency in developing skilled professionals.
Empowering Emirati Talent
Since its inception, ENEC has empowered over one thousand Emiratis through various programmes such as Scholarships, Train for Work, GDP, Diploma in Nuclear Technology (DNT), and Internships. The state-of-the-art facilities at Barakah have enabled ENEC to cultivate a team of over 70 Emirati SROs and ROs. These individuals form the backbone of the plant’s 190-strong SRO and RO workforce.
Emirati graduates interested in applying to the GPO Programme or exploring other talent development opportunities at ENEC can find more information on their website: www.enec.gov.ae/careers.
ENEC's commitment to developing local talent highlights its success in building a robust nuclear workforce within the UAE. This focus on education and training ensures that the nation remains at the forefront of safe and efficient nuclear energy operations well into the future.
