Endurance Sport In UAE: A Legacy Of Global Achievements And Equestrian Excellence
The UAE has consistently excelled in endurance riding, achieving significant victories on the global stage. In September 2025, UAE riders triumphed at the FEI World Endurance Championship for Young Riders and Juniors in Romania, securing the individual title for the fifth consecutive year. This victory adds to the nation's impressive record in international endurance competitions.
In August, UAE riders also celebrated success at the FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Horses in Jullianges, France. They clinched both gold and silver in the individual category. The same month, Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed and Issa Al Khiyari made history by winning the Mongol Derby, a grueling 1,000km race. They shared first place with Michael Pollard from the US and Anna Boden from the UK.
The sport of endurance riding has flourished in the UAE since its inception in 1993. This growth is supported by hosting international events and developing top-tier facilities like the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba. These venues are equipped with world-class infrastructure to support both local and international competitions.
The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation plays a pivotal role in promoting endurance riding. It collaborates with stables and endurance villages to organise events and facilitate Emirati riders' participation globally. The Federation also encourages women to compete by organising specific championships to enhance their involvement.
Endurance riding benefits from strong leadership support, inspired by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's legacy. His vision instilled a passion for equestrianism and traditional sports among Emiratis. This support has been crucial in elevating the sport to a global level of competitiveness.
Dr. Ghanem Al Hajri, Secretary-General of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, highlighted that prestigious events like the President of United Arab Emirates Endurance Cup contribute significantly to this development. Other notable events include the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Cup for Women's Private Stables Owners.
Sustainability of Achievements
Rider Salem Hamad Saeed Malhouf Al Kitbi emphasised that equestrianism in the UAE is marked by sustainable achievements. He credited this to advanced infrastructure and riders' exceptional skills. The UAE remains committed to maintaining its global excellence, driven by its rich legacy of accomplishments and unwavering support for equestrian sports.
This commitment ensures that endurance riding continues to thrive, with Emirati riders consistently performing at high levels internationally. The combination of leadership support, advanced facilities, and skilled riders positions the UAE as a leader in global endurance competitions.
