EMSTEEL And Magsort Collaborate To Advance Decarbonised Cement Production In The UAE

EMSTEEL, a major steel and building materials producer in the region, has entered into a strategic partnership with Finnish company Magsort. This collaboration aims to produce decarbonised cement, marking a significant step in EMSTEEL's decarbonisation journey. The agreement follows the successful implementation of an industrial-scale pilot for decarbonised cement production at EMSTEEL's Al Ain facility.

The pilot project utilised 10,000 tonnes of carbon-reducing materials developed by incorporating steel slag. This initiative showcases the complementary operations between EMSTEEL's two main business lines: steel and cement. By using steel slag as a raw material for clinker and cement production, EMSTEEL reinforces its commitment to sustainability in the sector.

EMSTEEL and Magsort Team Up for Cement Innovation

EMSTEEL is uniquely positioned to pioneer a viable circular economy case study due to its diverse product range. This capability underscores EMSTEEL’s strategic ability to expedite decarbonisation efforts across various sectors. It also strengthens its reputation as a regional leader in sustainability, setting new benchmarks for industrial innovation in developing low-carbon cement.

An integrated line will be built at the Al Ain plant to meet growing local demand for low-carbon cement. This line will process steel residue and refine materials sourced from EMSTEEL’s Abu Dhabi steel plant. This significant initiative is expected to directly contribute to reducing Scope 1 carbon dioxide emissions.

This initiative forms a core part of EMSTEEL’s decarbonisation strategy. The company aims for a 40% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions in its Steel Business Unit and a 30% reduction in its Cement Business Unit by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. EMSTEEL remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, expressed pride in this achievement, stating that it demonstrates what is possible when innovation meets ambition. He highlighted that transforming steel slag into valuable input for cement not only cuts emissions but also proves the commercial value of industrial circularity.

Industry Collaboration

Hugo Losada, CEO of Emirates Cement within the EMSTEEL Group, noted that this milestone is crucial in their decarbonisation journey. He expressed optimism about achieving their 2030 targets by 2026 through continued cooperation with Magsort.

Kalevi Kostiainen, CEO of Magsort, shared his satisfaction with reaching this milestone in Abu Dhabi. He praised the productive collaboration with Emirates Cement and highlighted how this facility serves as an industry example for significant CO₂ reduction using current technology and materials.

This partnership between EMSTEEL and Magsort exemplifies how industry collaboration can lead to substantial environmental benefits while advancing technological capabilities within existing frameworks.
