EMSTEEL Group Appointed Co-Chair Of IRENA's Alliance For Industry Decarbonisation To Drive Sustainable Practices

EMSTEEL Group has been appointed as co-chair of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation (AFID), led by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This role was previously held by TATA Steel. The announcement was made at AFID’s event titled "Decarbonising Hard-to-Abate Sectors with Renewables: Accelerating Net-Zero Ambitions" during Climate Week NYC in New York City.

The annual event is a significant gathering for business leaders and political figures to discuss policy frameworks and cross-sector collaboration aimed at achieving decarbonisation goals. EMSTEEL's new position underscores its dedication to fostering sustainable solutions and promoting a low-carbon supply chain in partnership with others in the industry.

Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, expressed pride in co-chairing the alliance. He stated, "We are honoured to be co-chairing the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation. This prestigious position provides us with a global platform to further enhance the dialogue surrounding industrial sustainable practices for a sustainable future."

Al Remeithi highlighted EMSTEEL's role in representing UAE’s net-zero achievements globally. He emphasised their efforts in forming strategic alliances, driving sustainability discussions, and showcasing low-carbon solutions. EMSTEEL aims to lead by example in global sustainable practices within the industry.

Aligned with UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, EMSTEEL has made notable progress in reducing its carbon footprint. The Group achieved a 10% year-on-year decrease through innovative strategies focused on sustainability. These efforts have earned them recognition as a 2024 Steel Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The World Economic Forum (WEF) also acknowledged EMSTEEL as one of five steel producers globally taking concrete steps towards decarbonising the steel value chain. Additionally, they received the Sustainable Manufacturer Award from UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT).

Role of the Alliance

The Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation aims to facilitate industry-level dialogue and cooperation to help companies develop effective decarbonisation strategies aligned with national net-zero commitments. Supported by IRENA, it serves as a global platform for sharing insights, experiences, and best practices.

Within this alliance, UAE-based companies like Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), and Tadweer Group represent UAE’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions. Their involvement highlights the country's commitment to leading global efforts in industrial decarbonisation.
