Empowering Women In Creative Industries: The Role Of Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council

The Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council offers a unique model for empowering women in heritage and advanced crafts. This initiative is crucial for achieving empowerment, equality, and leadership for women in social and economic spheres. Since its inception in 2018, the Council has aimed to boost women's participation in creative industries by merging economic empowerment with cultural identity.

Reem BinKaram, Director-General of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, highlights the significant progress made by Irthi women. They have successfully combined heritage with modern innovation, making "Irthi" an inspiring example for women and institutions worldwide. BinKaram states, "At Irthi, we strive to achieve equality and equal opportunities in sectors at the heart of global sustainable development goals, particularly in promoting economic growth, preserving tangible and cultural heritage, and ensuring women's roles and participation in supporting the growth of creative industries. We also focus on safeguarding the rights of all artisans in all stages of production, which is one of the most important forms of equality that creators should enjoy in their fields."

Irthi's Role in Empowering Women Creatives

"Irthi" has built a strong international presence through collaborations with designers and artisans from countries like Jordan, Italy, and Pakistan. These partnerships have facilitated knowledge exchange and skill enhancement in design, manufacturing, management, and marketing. Such collaborations have helped establish "Irthi" as a significant player on the global stage.

The Council's efforts have opened new avenues for women globally. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres remarked, equality in non-traditional sectors signifies not only justice but also serves as a catalyst for growth. Societies embracing diversity are better equipped to innovate and adapt to future challenges.

In its international engagements, "Irthi" has showcased its work at prestigious events like "Design Miami – Shanghai." Here, designs reflecting Emirati and Arab heritage with a modern twist were presented. Such platforms allow "Irthi" to highlight its unique blend of tradition and contemporary design.

Representing the UAE at the "London Design Festival," "Erthi" displayed 78 exclusive artistic pieces. These included jewellery, decor items, furniture, bags, and other creative works. The festival is one of the world's largest design exhibitions. Additionally, "Irthi" participated in both "Milan Design Week 2022" and "Milan Design Week 2023," key events on the global arts calendar.

Empowering Women Through Craftsmanship

The Council's initiatives have enabled women to enter the artisan market with advanced skills. Although it began in the UAE, it now offers a global experience that empowers women worldwide to engage in craftsmanship effectively. This approach combines economic empowerment with cultural promotion.

"Irthi's" achievements demonstrate that women are vital contributors to global efforts. By promoting women's roles in creative industries while preserving cultural heritage, the Council sets an example for others to follow. Its success underscores how empowering women can lead to broader societal benefits.
