Emirati Women Make Historic Advances In Economy, Science, And Global Leadership In 2025

In 2025, the UAE made significant strides in women's empowerment through national initiatives and international roles. Emirati women were placed at the forefront of global decision-making, solidifying the UAE's leadership in this area. A notable achievement was the introduction of the "Mother of the Nation's 50:50 Vision," a strategic plan extending to 2075. This roadmap aims to improve quality of life, enhance participation in future-tech sectors, and boost female representation in leadership positions.

The UAE Cabinet supported these goals by reorganising the UAE Gender Balance Council. This reorganisation refined legislative frameworks, helping the country achieve a 13th place globally and first regionally in the 2025 UNDP Gender Equality Index. Economic empowerment also saw significant progress with initiatives from the General Women's Union (GWU). These included launching the world's first official employment programme for "Productive Families," offering monthly salaries, benefits, and social security.

Historic Advances by Emirati Women in 2025

The GWU further expanded Emirati women's presence in the global economy by establishing an Emirati women entrepreneurs council in China. Additionally, they launched the "We Grow for Sustainability" project to train 3,500 women and support 140 female-led agricultural projects over five years. In science and technology, targeted programmes like "AI-Forward" have trained over 100 women in cloud computing and data analysis.

A report by Heriot-Watt University highlighted that the UAE achieved the highest female board representation in the GCC at 14.8 percent, marking a 37 percent increase from last year. Women now make up half of the Federal National Council, 70 percent of university graduates, 56 percent of STEM graduates, and over half of those working in the UAE space sector. Notably, they constitute 80 percent of the scientific team for the Hope Probe.

On an international level, Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais was elected Secretary-General of UN Tourism for 2026-2029. She is the first woman to hold this position in its 50-year history. The World Economic Forum also selected Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, Meera Sultan Al Suwaidi, and Tuka Waddah Alhanai as members of its Young Global Leaders Council for 2025.

Environmental leadership was reinforced with Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak's re-election as President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature for a second term. Other Emirati women secured senior roles in international pharmaceutical and interfaith leadership organisations.

The UAE continues to bridge gender gaps through various initiatives across different sectors. These efforts not only empower women within the nation but also elevate their status on a global scale.
