Emirati Filmmaker Nahla Almheiri Champions Female Voices In Cinema
During a captivating session titled "Empowering Female Voices" at the Xposure International Photography Festival (Xposure 2024) in Sharjah, Emirati filmmaker Nahla Hamad Bin Fahad Almheiri shared her insights on the importance of knowledge transfer and sharing experiences for the benefit of future generations. The discussion, held on Sunday, saw Nahla in conversation with Dr. Abdelsalam Alhammadi of Sharjah TV, where she delved into her journey of breaking barriers in the predominantly male film industry.
Nahla Al Fahad, a distinguished filmmaker and executive producer based in Dubai, has garnered international acclaim and numerous awards for her innovative contributions to cinema. She reminisced about her early fascination with cartoons and storytelling, which was sparked by a Kodak camera she had as a child. Despite her family's lack of involvement in cinema, Nahla's passion for film was undeterred, leading her to consume up to 40 films a week and explore photography extensively.

Her academic journey in Media Marketing and Advertising from a Dubai college laid the groundwork for her eventual foray into cinema. Nahla emphasized the value of practical experience and self-education over traditional university learning in developing one's skills in filmmaking. She highlighted the importance of engaging with experts in the field to overcome challenges and enhance one's knowledge.
Nahla's filmography includes the award-winning movie "The Tainted Veil," which received accolades at the International Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, and California. She pointed out the global interest in stories from the Arab world and stressed the role of cinema in bridging cultural gaps.
Collaborating closely with Shams (Sharjah Media City), Nahla expressed her gratitude towards Sharjah for its support and belief in her vision. Her work includes several videos for awareness campaigns, notably during the Covid lockdown years. One of her productions for Shams on domestic violence, "218: Behind the Wall of Silence," has won three awards, showcasing her commitment to addressing social issues through cinema.
Nahla's journey from a young girl fascinated by cartoons to an acclaimed filmmaker underscores the power of perseverance, self-education, and the importance of mentorship and community support. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers, especially women looking to make their mark in the industry.
