Emirati Diplomats Enhance Skills On AGDA's Global Diplomatic Training Expedition
Emirati diplomats in training at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) have recently returned from a two-week educational journey spanning Italy, Switzerland, the United States, India, and Ethiopia. This trip is a cornerstone of their practical training, aiming to immerse them in the multifaceted world of diplomacy and international relations. The AGDA's annual expedition is designed to offer these budding diplomats a hands-on understanding of global diplomacy, enhancing their grasp of international development, and the intricacies involved in both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic engagements.
Nickolay Mladenov, the Director-General of AGDA, emphasized the importance of these international visits. He stated, "These trips align with our mission to prepare a new generation of diplomats to tackle global challenges effectively. By introducing our students to key diplomatic hubs like Rome, Geneva, Washington, New Delhi, and Addis Ababa, we provide them with a comprehensive insight into governance and foreign policy." He further highlighted the trips' role in fostering camaraderie and facilitating diplomatic networking essential for their future roles.
Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Dhaheri, AGDA’s Deputy Director-General, remarked on the educational value of these trips. He noted that they offer students a broad perspective on diplomacy and a firsthand experience of cultural diversity. This exposure is crucial for understanding the complexities of modern diplomatic functions.
The students' itinerary was packed with activities aimed at broadening their understanding of UAE's foreign policy and diplomatic practices. They attended official ceremonies, engaged in discussions at prestigious institutions, and participated in social events. For instance, in New Delhi, they visited the Indian Institute of Technology's Research Innovation Centre and engaged in discussions at the Ministry of External Affairs' Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan. In Addis Ababa, a dinner hosted by the UAE Ambassador at the African Union Headquarters offered them valuable networking opportunities.
In Rome, the focus was on AI and Diplomacy at Luiss University and interactions with the World Food Programme (WFP). Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., discussions with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Benaim and the UAE-US Business Council enriched their understanding of diplomatic relations between the UAE and the US.
Students shared their reflections on this enriching experience. Mariam Al Mansoori noted the trip's role in deepening her understanding of global diplomacy through direct engagement with different cultures and diplomatic practices. Hamdan Al Naqbi expressed how the trip broadened his perspective on embracing diversity and navigating the complexities of an interconnected world.
The AGDA is committed to equipping its students with not only knowledge but also the problem-solving skills necessary for their future roles as UAE diplomats. Through such comprehensive training programs that include region-specific modules and access to leading experts in diplomacy, AGDA stands as a premier institution for diplomatic education in the UAE.
