Emirati Astronauts Visit Childhood Cancer Patients To Inspire Hope

Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) recently organised a touching visit for 25 children undergoing cancer treatment at Mediclinic Hospital Dubai. The event featured Emirati astronauts Nora AlMatrooshi and Mohammad AlMulla from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). Aisha Al Mulla, Director of FOCP, Johan Snygg, Medical Director of Mediclinic Hospital Dubai, and several dedicated physicians also attended.

The visit aimed to provide emotional support and inspire the children by allowing them to explore space through the experiences of the astronauts. The children were encouraged to express their ideas, feelings, and dreams. They engaged with the astronauts, asking questions about outer space and listening to their inspiring stories.

Nora AlMatrooshi, the first Emirati female astronaut, explained how rockets carry spaceships from Earth's surface into space. She discussed various aspects of space missions, including the International Space Station (ISS), its systems, and how astronauts stay on the station for extended periods. She also talked about communication with ground stations and robot control.

Mohammad AlMulla shared his journey from being selected in the second batch of MBRSC’s UAE Astronaut Programme to graduating from NASA’s Astronaut Candidate Class. He detailed the extensive training he underwent in the USA as part of this programme. He answered questions about spacesuits, helmets, and special garments that protect astronauts from atmospheric pressure changes.

The children interacted enthusiastically with the astronauts. Some expressed their wishes to float in space, while others dreamed of living on the moon or collecting stars to hide under their pillows. This interaction provided a much-needed boost to their morale during their treatment journey.

At the end of this uplifting visit, FOCP and MBRSC distributed a variety of gifts and games to encourage the young patients. These tokens aimed to uplift their spirits and provide comfort as they continue their fight against cancer.
