Emirates Expands Travel Rehearsal Programme To 17 Cities For Autism Awareness
Emirates has made significant strides in enhancing travel accessibility, especially for individuals with autism. The airline's Travel Rehearsal programme, launched last year, is now expanding to 17 cities. This initiative allows children with autism to experience the airport journey before their actual flights, helping them prepare better. Emirates has also become the first Autism Certified Airline™, training over 30,000 staff members to assist passengers with autism.
In April, Emirates focused on raising autism awareness among its global passengers. The airline featured a range of content on neurodiversity through its inflight entertainment system, ice. Adel al Redha, Deputy President and COO of Emirates, stated: "Emirates has been driving and facilitating good progress in accessible travel, and it is part of our operational strategy. We continue to work on this mission to make travel more inclusive."

The Travel Rehearsal programme began in 2023 as a collaborative effort involving various Dubai-based organisations and schools for autism. Feedback from these partners was crucial in shaping the initiative. Now expanded globally, the programme includes cities like Barcelona, Brisbane, Budapest, Cebu, and Christchurch. More locations are joining each month.
Parents and educators involved in these rehearsals have praised the initiative for providing children with a sense of security and familiarity before flying. The presence of trained staff further ensures a smooth experience for young travellers with autism.
Emirates' commitment to accessible travel extends beyond its own operations. The airline collaborates with airports, local authorities, centres, and foundations worldwide to implement the Travel Rehearsal programme. Although not yet bookable as a service, participation is by invitation through accredited centres.
Adel al Redha highlighted that Emirates' efforts align with their social and professional responsibilities. He added that being recognised as a Certified Autism Center™ at the start of 2024 marked a significant milestone in their journey towards inclusivity.
The ongoing expansion of Emirates' initiatives reflects its dedication to making air travel more inclusive for everyone. By continuously improving accessibility measures and training staff extensively, Emirates aims to break down barriers faced by travellers with autism.
