Emirates Literature Foundation And MBRSC Announce New Voices In Sci-Fi Short Story Award For Young Writers
The Emirates Literature Foundation, in partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, has introduced the MBRSC Short Story Award: New Voices in Sci-Fi. This initiative seeks to motivate young science fiction writers in the UAE by providing a platform for showcasing their creativity. The competition is open to individuals aged 16 to 30, inviting original short stories in English or Arabic, with word limits ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 words. Submissions are due by 16th November 2025.
During the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2025, the award was announced at a press conference attended by notable figures such as Dr. Sultan AlNeyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; Salem AlMarri, Director-General of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre; Isobel Abulhoul OBE, Founder and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation; and Ahlam Bolooki, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation.

Dr. Sultan AlNeyadi expressed that science fiction has always had the power to transcend reality and inspire humanity to explore new worlds. He stated that "The MBRSC Short Story Award: New Voices in Sci-Fi encourages our youth to delve into these very possibilities of space and science." The aim is for young writers to imagine future possibilities and inspire real-world advancements in space exploration and technology.
Salem AlMarri highlighted that inspiring young minds is crucial for innovation and progress. He noted that through this award, they aim to empower young creators to shape a future rooted in scientific advancement. "Through our partnership with the Emirates Literature Foundation," he said, "we seek to create a nurturing environment that supports creativity."
A panel of esteemed judges will evaluate submissions based on originality, creativity, scientific accuracy, narrative strength, character development, and overall literary merit. Winners will be revealed at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2026. They will receive a commemorative plaque and access to exclusive creative writing workshops. Additionally, their winning entries will be published in an anthology launching at the festival in 2027.
Isobel Abulhoul shared her enthusiasm about collaborating with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre. She believes this initiative offers young people a chance to engage with science fiction's exciting world. "We believe this initiative will provide a springboard for emerging literary talent," she said.
Cultural Heritage and Future Vision
Ahlam Bolooki emphasised that Arab culture honours its rich traditions while envisioning future societal advancements. She remarked on how Arab scholars have historically been pioneers in science and mathematics. "The MBRSC Short Story Award: New Voices in Sci-Fi opens new doors for authors," she added.
The award aims not only to foster creativity but also to reinforce the UAE's commitment to enabling youth contributions beyond Earth's boundaries. It underscores that discovery remains central to cultural heritage while inspiring future generations.
