Emirates Joins Aviation Circularity Consortium To Drive Sustainable Practices In Aviation
Emirates has become the second airline to join the Aviation Circularity Consortium (ACC), partnering with SL Metals to promote a circular economy in aviation. This move highlights the industry's increasing focus on sustainability and decarbonisation. Emirates' expertise in sustainable fleet management will be vital in tackling the challenge of managing end-of-life aircraft safely and responsibly.
SL Metals, based in Singapore, is a key player in aluminium alloy distribution across Asia Pacific and the Middle East. The company provides a wide range of aluminium products for sectors like aerospace and precision engineering. Their involvement in the ACC will help drive sustainable supply chain practices and boost material circularity within aviation.

Emirates has integrated recycling and circular solutions into its operations as part of its sustainability strategy. The airline is committed to reducing its environmental impact through initiatives such as cabin interior upcycling, using sustainable materials, inflight programmes, and waste reduction efforts. By joining the ACC, Emirates aims to further advance circular aviation innovations.
The participation of SL Metals adds valuable expertise to the Consortium's efforts. Sam Tan Yee Leong, CEO of SL Metals, stated, "Aluminium plays a critical role in aviation, as in many other industries, making responsible sourcing and efficient material use essential." He emphasised that aluminium production contributes 3% to global industrial CO2 emissions, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices.
The ACC's growth continues with Emirates' involvement, reinforcing its commitment to accelerating supply chain decarbonisation through high-value circularity. This follows the Consortium's launch of its 2050 Industry Roadmap in November 2024. Emirates' participation will enhance collaborative momentum within the ACC.
Ahmed Safa, Head of Engineering & MRO at Emirates Group, expressed the need for sustainable end-of-life solutions for aircraft. He said, "Aviation must rethink how materials are used across an aircraft's lifecycle, from production to retirement." Safa highlighted the urgency due to the increasing number of retired aircraft.
Future Pathways for Aviation
Emirates is actively seeking new ways to extend its fleet's lifespan while reducing waste and enhancing efficiency. Joining the ACC allows collaboration on sustainable initiatives that support aviation's transition to a circular economy. The airline's experience will be crucial in developing safe and responsible methods for handling retired aircraft.
SL Metals remains dedicated to improving sustainability within its operations while supporting broader industry efforts. Through their involvement with the ACC, they aim to advance best practices in aluminium use and contribute to shaping a more resilient and sustainable aviation supply chain.
The partnership between Emirates and SL Metals within the ACC underscores a shared commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in aviation. As demand for critical materials grows, their collaboration will help develop impactful circular solutions for the industry.
