Emirates' Initiatives Save 48,000 Tonnes Of Fuel, Slash Emissions By 151,000 Tonnes

Emirates has been implementing "Green Operating Procedures" (Green Ops) since 2016, aiming to reduce fuel use both on the ground and in-flight. The airline's approach includes educating pilots, raising awareness, and utilising data analytics and technology to manage flights efficiently. A recent report titled "How Emirates pilots reduce fuel emissions during operations" highlights these efforts.

The initiative is led by an internal cross-functional Operations Efficiency Steering Group. Their goal is to minimise unnecessary fuel burn and emissions while maintaining Emirates' high safety standards. In the financial year 2023-2024, Green Ops and other initiatives helped Emirates cut fuel consumption by over 48,000 tonnes and carbon emissions by more than 151,000 tonnes.

Emirates Cuts Fuel Use and Emissions

Captain Hassan Al Hammadi, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Flight Operations, praised the Flight Operations team for their role in reducing fuel consumption and emissions. He emphasised that this achievement was possible due to collective discipline, commitment, and dedication to sustainable aviation practices.

"We’ve equipped our pilot community with the latest tools and applications to monitor and review their flight performance," said Captain Al Hammadi. "This helps them improve their awareness of how their flying techniques impact fuel consumption and emissions. We’ll continue to invest in advanced technologies and accelerate solutions that yield long-term environmental benefits."

Some of the key operational measures include:

  • Discretionary Extra Fuel: Minimising the amount of extra fuel carried.
  • Flight Speed Optimisation: Adjusting flight speeds for optimal fuel efficiency.
  • Reduced Flap Landing: Using less flap during landing to save fuel.
  • Idle Reverse Thrust: Minimising reverse thrust usage during landing.
  • Reduced Engine Taxi-In (RETI): Using fewer engines while taxiing after landing.
  • Optimised Flight Routings: Planning routes that are more fuel-efficient.
  • Technology and Innovation - Flight Pulse: Utilising advanced tools for flight performance monitoring.
  • Centre of Gravity Optimisation: Adjusting the aircraft's centre of gravity for better efficiency.
  • APU Usage: Reducing the use of Auxiliary Power Units when not necessary.
  • Adjusted Potable Water Uplift: Carrying only the necessary amount of potable water.

The airline's commitment to sustainability is evident through these measures. By focusing on efficient flight operations, Emirates aims to contribute positively to environmental conservation while ensuring passenger safety remains uncompromised.

This comprehensive approach not only benefits the environment but also sets a standard for other airlines aiming to adopt sustainable practices. Emirates continues to lead by example in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint through innovative solutions and dedicated teamwork.
