Emirates Global Aluminium Initiates Construction Of Pilot Reduction Cells For Advanced EX Smelting Technology

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has initiated the construction of 10 pilot reduction cells for its next-generation smelting technology, EX. Located at Al Taweelah, this pilot project aims to showcase advanced Industry 4.0 capabilities in aluminium production, enhancing EGA's existing research and development efforts.

The EX technology is engineered to increase aluminium output while reducing energy consumption and emissions. It integrates advanced Internet of Things sensors and connectivity for real-time data collection, further advancing Industry 4.0 applications. EGA plans to incorporate its current Industry 4.0 use cases into EX technology and develop new digital capabilities focused on artificial intelligence and data analytics.

EGA Begins Construction of EX Smelting Cells

With the addition of more sensors and data, EGA aims to use artificial intelligence for autonomous control of pots, cranes, and vehicles. This will optimise potline processes, minimise disruptions, and enhance efficiency. Machine learning will support continuous process improvement and precise task planning to achieve the full potential of EX technology.

EGA's existing Industry 4.0 applications include predicting pot failures, forecasting dynamic shift life, and employing AI vision-enabled smart cranes. The first hot metal from these pilot reduction cells is anticipated in the first half of 2025. The goal is for EX to be ready for large-scale industrialisation with advanced Industry 4.0 features by 2028.
