Emirates Flight Catering Acquires World's Largest Indoor Farm, Bustanica
Dubai-based Emirates Flight Catering has recently taken a significant step by fully acquiring Emirates Bustanica, previously known as Emirates Crop One, alongside its consumer brand Bustanica, recognized as the world's largest indoor vertical farm. This acquisition marks Emirates Bustanica as entirely UAE-owned, aligning with the nation's ambitious goals to bolster food and water security and advance its agricultural prowess.
Strategically situated near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the Bustanica facility spans 330,000sqft and boasts the capacity to produce over 1 million kilograms of high-quality leafy greens annually. This equates to an impressive yield of 3 tonnes daily, achieved while consuming 95% less water than traditional farming methods. The move not only underscores Emirates Bustanica's commitment to innovation but also positions it as a pioneer in sustainable agriculture within the region.
Under the brand name Bustanica, the farm's produce is now a staple in major UAE retailers including Spinney's, Waitrose, Carrefour, and Choithrams. Additionally, Emirates and various other airlines feature Bustanica's fresh produce in their in-flight meals, offering passengers a taste of the farm's exceptional leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens.
Since its inception in July 2022, Bustanica has quickly become a topic of interest among UAE residents, known for its wide array of produce that is best enjoyed fresh from the box to avoid any potential contamination from tap water. The company prides itself on cultivating produce devoid of pesticides or herbicides, ensuring each item is clean, fresh, and packed with nutrients. The range of products includes lettuce, spinach, parsley, and kale.
The technology driving Bustanica's operations is at the forefront of agricultural innovation. Utilizing machine learning, artificial intelligence, and various patented technologies, the company is led by a team of agronomy experts, engineers, horticulturists, and plant scientists. This specialized in-house team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of sustainable farming.
Emirates Bustanica's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship was recently highlighted through its selection as a preferred produce supplier for COP28. This recognition further solidifies the company's position as a leader in sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for the UAE and beyond.
