Emirates Dermatology Society Organises March To Raise Awareness On Psoriasis
The Emirates Dermatology Society recently held a public awareness walk at Al Safa Park in Dubai. This event was part of the "Don't Rest Until It's Clear" campaign, aimed at raising awareness and offering support to those affected by psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition impacting over 125 million people globally. Besides its visible symptoms, it can cause emotional distress, mental health challenges, and social stigma.
In the UAE, psoriasis affects about 3 to 4 percent of the population, aligning with global statistics. Dr Ayman Al Naeem, President of the Emirates Dermatology Society and Head of the Dermatology Department at Ibrahim Obaidullah Hospital, noted that psoriasis affects both genders equally. It is most prevalent between ages 15 and 35 but can occur at any age, though it is rare in early childhood.

Dr Al Naeem highlighted that biologic treatments are among the most advanced options for moderate to severe psoriasis cases. These treatments are particularly useful when traditional methods fail. However, he cautioned that while effective with regular use, they do not offer a permanent cure as symptoms may return if treatment stops.
The UAE's health insurance system is one of the strongest in the region. Many insurers cover biologic treatments for chronic or severe cases. Psoriasis results from immune system dysfunction and is influenced by genetic and environmental factors like stress and cold weather.
Dr Raghda Al Maashari, Head of Public Relations and Media at the Emirates Dermatology Society, stated: "Through organising such events, we aim to dispel misconceptions, promote empathy and build a supportive environment for those living with psoriasis. This walk is more than just an event – it is a gesture of solidarity and a step towards a more inclusive and understanding society."
Elhussein Abdel Latif, General Manager of Gulf–Arabian Company at AbbVie, expressed: "The Emirates Dermatology Society has long been a strategic partner, and our continued collaboration is focused on improving standards of care for psoriasis patients. Together, we hope to shape a future where this condition becomes a thing of the past while improving quality of life for those affected."
