UAE: EHS Adopts Innovative Technology For Early Detection Of Vision Problems In Children
Emirates Health Services (EHS) has introduced a new technology to detect vision issues in children early. The portable Spot Vision Screener is now part of their strategy to improve children's health care. This device quickly identifies vision problems in young children, ensuring they receive the best possible care.
The Spot Vision Screener is designed for children aged six months to five years. It will be used during regular health check-ups at Child Health and Vaccinations Clinics. This proactive tool targets various eye conditions and will be available at 20 primary healthcare centres under EHS.

Dr. Kareema Alraesi, Director of the Primary Healthcare Department at EHS, emphasised that adopting this technology shows EHS's dedication to sustainable healthcare for UAE's community, especially its children. This initiative aligns with the Innovation Strategy 2023-2026, which aims to meet global healthcare standards.
The Spot Vision Screener is known for its accuracy and reliability. It provides precise results that help determine if further examinations or treatments are needed. This capability is crucial in preventing negative impacts on children's academic and social development by enhancing early detection of vision issues.
Dr. Karima highlighted the importance of regular screenings, saying, "We recommend conducting this screening every six months until the child reaches the age of five to ensure early identification of any potential problems that may impact vision or eye health."
The technology can detect various eye conditions in children, such as near-sightedness, farsightedness, strabismus, and astigmatism. If a problem is found, children are referred to specialised healthcare centres for detailed evaluations and treatment if necessary.
The device is both fast and efficient, completing screenings in just seconds. It is user-friendly and requires minimal training for healthcare professionals to operate it effectively. This ease of use ensures that screenings can be conducted smoothly without extensive preparation.
Moreover, the device offers a comfortable experience for children as it is non-invasive and requires little interaction. This makes it particularly suitable for young patients who might otherwise feel anxious during medical procedures.
This initiative by EHS underscores its commitment to improving pediatric health through innovative solutions. By implementing advanced technologies like the Spot Vision Screener, EHS aims to secure a healthy future for children across the UAE.
