Egypt And Qatar Enhance Diplomatic Efforts For Gaza Ceasefire Following US Proposal

Efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip are being intensified by Egypt and Qatar. Both nations issued a joint statement on Sunday, highlighting their commitment to achieving a ceasefire. Their actions are based on a proposal from US envoy Steve Witkoff, which aims to restart indirect negotiations.

Egypt and Qatar, working alongside the US, have pledged to enhance diplomatic efforts to overcome obstacles in the negotiation process. They urge all involved parties to act responsibly and support mediation efforts aimed at ending the crisis in Gaza and restoring peace and stability in the region.

Gaza Ceasefire Efforts by Egypt and Qatar

The proposed plan includes a 60-day temporary truce, which Egypt and Qatar hope will soon be agreed upon. This truce is seen as a crucial step towards a lasting ceasefire. "This would allow for an end to the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Strip, the opening of crossings, and the entry of humanitarian and relief aid to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza," stated their joint declaration.

The two countries emphasised that this ceasefire should lay the groundwork for a comprehensive resolution of the conflict. It should also initiate reconstruction efforts in Gaza, following a plan endorsed by the Cairo Arab summit on 4 March 2025. The aim is not only to halt hostilities but also to begin rebuilding affected areas.

Witkoff's proposal outlines a 60-day ceasefire with specific conditions. It includes releasing 10 Israeli captives in stages: four on day one, two on day 30, and four on day 60. Additionally, it involves a phased return of Israeli bodies. However, there is no assurance that this ceasefire will extend beyond 60 days.

Egypt and Qatar remain hopeful that these mediation efforts will lead to an agreement soon. They view this as an essential step towards resolving outstanding issues and achieving long-term peace in the region.
