EGA Spectro Alloys Launches Metallurgical Testing Laboratory To Enhance Recycled Aluminium Quality

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has introduced a new metallurgical testing laboratory in Minnesota, USA. This development is part of the expansion of the EGA Spectro Alloys aluminium recycling plant. The lab will perform metallographic analyses and mechanical tests on EGA Spectro’s products to ensure they meet high-quality standards.

The facility will also offer sample testing from customer castings or extrusions. This service aims to help troubleshoot and optimise downstream quality, providing faster and improved analysis for clients. The expansion increases EGA Spectro Alloys' production capacity by 55 thousand tonnes, bringing the total to 165 thousand tonnes annually.

Recycling aluminium is significantly more energy-efficient than producing new metal. It uses 95% less electricity and results in much lower greenhouse gas emissions. This makes it an environmentally friendly choice for industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

The demand for recycled aluminium in the United States is projected to reach approximately 7.6 million tonnes annually by 2033, according to CRU, a business intelligence organisation. Currently, the US ranks as the second-largest market for recycled aluminium globally.

Abdulnasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, stated, "The new laboratory strengthens EGA Spectro Alloys’ ability to meet the quality expectations of our customers and support them in improving their own products. As demand for low-carbon aluminium grows, our focus is on delivering the metal our customers need with the quality and reliability they expect from EGA."

EGA acquired an 80% stake in EGA Spectro Alloys in 2024. The expansion project at EGA Spectro is expected to reach full production capacity by the first quarter of 2026. This strategic move aligns with EGA's commitment to meeting increasing market demands while maintaining high-quality standards.
